After reaching their camping site, Henry Ford and Charles Edison found an abandoned boat and paddled into a nearby lake. As they rowed, they noticed several snakes. Ford pulled out his .22 target pistol, and Charles credited him with being able to hit a snake from 25 feet away. One of the guides also shot a turkey for dinner, which may be the one Ford holds here.

One evening, the group was doused by a heavy downpour, leading Charles Edison to write a short poem: “Consumption, pneumonia and grip, Will be the result of this trip, We’ll all die together, From the inclement weather, On the doormat of Heaven we’ll drip.” Bessie Krup refused to leave her tent until her clothes were dried, so Henry Ford put up a makeshift clothesline, seen in the background of the photograph.
